The talent of the FDLTCC football team was on display Friday evening. However, it was not their football skills in the spotlight, but rather their “real” talent. The FDLTCC coaching staff hosted their annual preseason talent show as a team building exercise.

First, the coaches treated the players to a barbeque and then it was on to the talent show where each player got the opportunity to showcase his unique skills.

Defensive coordinator Dave Wilson narrated the event which saw each player take the stage. The first couple of acts displayed exactly the refined talent you would expect of college football players, eating. The first player came up a little short trying to eat waffles and drink milk in three minutes. Next, a group of three tried to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in one minute. Having success at this with some time to spare, the group was challenged to eat the sandwiches in the time remaining. Again, no winner appeared, with the players coming close but finishing short.

The eating competition gave way to more traditional displays of talent, with several trying their hand at singing and dancing. One player displayed his artistic talent by drawing and displaying a portrait. Another proved that big burley football players can also have a soft side by writing and then reading his poem.

Local athlete Jordan Berglund
entertained the crowd with a card trick, while others tried their hand at stand up comedy. In an amazing display of skill, a player let his teammates mix up a rubics cube, then twist it back to a perfect display in under three minutes.

Perhaps the loudest ovation of the evening came when Aaron Miller played his guitar and sang Adam Sandler’s “The Lonesome Kicker.” Miller, who is actually a linebacker, brought down the house by tailoring the song to fit the FDLTCC football team.

Saving the best for last and upstaging the players was linebacker coach Don McNames. McNames, a former linebacker at Georgia Military Community College, showed that he still has athletic abilities by performing a standing back flip.

All in all, it was a good way for the student athletes to come together and unwind after a week of early morning practices. Next week it is back to business as the Thunder prepare for their season opener against Central Lakes College at the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Kick-Off Classic in St. Cloud on Friday, August 28 at 7:00pm
