Marshall Ends Bombers Season

The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers knocked off the Barnum Bombers Wednesday in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs in Duluth by a score of 9-3. The Hilltoppers, the second seed in sub-section one advance to the section quarterfinals today and they will face Mesabi East in Cohasset.


Duluth Marshall’s Doug Lewis pitched seven innings and allowed only three runs, while giving up seven hits and striking out 10 Barnum batters Wednesday afternoon. Lewis also only allowed two walks on the day in the six run victory.


Barnum was led by Seth Vogt, who finished going 2-3 on the afternoon with a double. Sam Kovanen was also 2-3 and Danny Saarela collected two runs batted in for Barnum in the loss. Barnum had won five of the last six games but saw their season end as their hopes of advancing came up short.


Tony Perrella had two runs batted in while scoring two runs in the Marshall win. Jake Fugere was 2-3 with a run batted in and Alex Johnson collected three bases on balls and scored two runs in the Marshall victory.


Zach Carlson took the loss for the Bombers as he pitched three innings, allowing five earned runs; he allowed seven hits and walked three batters. Carlson also struck out four in the loss for the Bombers as they fell at Bulldog Park at UMD.


The Bombers season comes to an end with an overall record of 9-9 on the season. Duluth Marshall improves to 8-11 on the season and they will take on the Giants of Mesabi East at Cohasset today in the Section 7A quarterfinals, the Giants enter with a record of 15-5 overall.
