Errors Cost Rebels In Season Ending Loss

TWO HARBORS- The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels baseball season came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Two Harbors came away with an 11-1 sectional opening round matchup of the section 7AA tournament.


The Rebels who found themselves in a behind the eight ball in the first inning and were never able to overcome the host of errors which cost the Rebels a chance to advance in the sectional tournament. The Rebels who defeated the Agates earlier this season saw four first inning errors give the Agates a 4-0 lead and they never looked back as they will face Proctor today in the quarterfinals at Hibbing.


The Agates added two more unearned runs in the second inning and an error in the Agates third inning lead to yet another unearned run. With Two Harbors leading 7-0 after three innings the Rebels scored their only run in the fourth inning when Teddy Ryan scored to make it 7-1. Ryan scored on an Agate throwing error which allowed the Rebels lone run of the game.


Two more Rebel errors led to three runs for the Agates in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the Rebels eighth error of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning led to the eleventh run of the game as the Agates ten run the Rebels Wednesday afternoon.


The Rebels out-hit the Agates as they finished with six hits to the Agates four. Spencer Clough led the Rebels with two hits. Brad Fossum, Hunter Halverson, Tyler Cisar, and Darren Grutkowski all finished with hits for the Rebels. Although they out-hit the Agates, the Rebels could not string two hits together to create a scoring threat.


Spencer Clough took the loss for the Rebels, he gave up 11 runs all unearned; surrendered four hits; he walked four and struck out five batters. Clough also hit two batters he faced and committed two balks. BJ Young came in relief for Clough in the fourth inning. Sam Strom was the winning pitcher for the Agates.
