Proctor Boys Open Playoffs with 5 inning shut-out

Jake Lewis and Matt Dolsen combined on a one-hit shutout as Proctor defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 9-0 in the first round of the Section 7AA Playoffs at Proctor. Lewis (6-1, 0.43 ERA) was the winning pitcher. He allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in five innings. Dolsen pitched two perfect innings of relief.

Proctor broke open a 2-0 game with a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Jesse Scanlon.

Proctor’s Ian Scherber hit two doubles, breaking Tyler Pionk’s school record of 17 career doubles. Scherber now has 19.

Scherber was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Scanlon was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Jack Nikko was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Jimmy Merling was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Cody Dolsen was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Proctor won its 50th game with Kyle Wojtysiak as head coach. In his three seasons, Wojtysiak has piloted the Rails to a 50-17 record.

Proctor (13-6) travels to Hibbing and will face either Moose Lake-Willow River or Two Harbors at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. Should the Rails win that game, they will also play a 7:30 p.m. game at Hibbing tomorrow.

Eveleth-Gilbert finishes the season with a 5-15 record.
