The Virginia Blue Devils managed to outlast the Esko Eskomos in an eight inning Section 7AA girls softball game in Cohasset on Friday afternoon.

Trailing 5-3 in the sixth inning the Eskomos rallied for three runs to gain a 6-5 edge. However, the Blue Devils bounced back for a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. It looked like Virginia had won the game in the bottom of the seventh when another run scored on a fly ball and tag up at third base, but Esko appealed the call saying the runner left before the catch. Umpires agreed with Esko and the runner was called out sending the game to an extra inning. Virginia won the game in the bottom of the eighth to end the Esko season at 13-9.

Vicky Fossland, Amy Rice, Hailey Greenwaldt and Brylee Seitz each banged out a pair of hits for Virginia off of Esko pitcher Abbey Saralampi. Saralampi allowed seven runs on nine hits while striking out six in taking the loss.

Steph Miller led the Eskomos with four hits and scored a run and Saralampi also reached base in all four of her plate appearances and scored a run in the loss. Ashley Bergerson also rapped out a pair of singles and scored a run for the Eskomos. In all, Esko managed eight hits off Virginia hurler Elizabeth Anderson, who also fanned three and walked four.

Virginia improved to 11-11 on the season and will face Mora in the Section 7AA double-elimination tournament on Tuesday in Cloquet at Braun Park.
