Rebel Softball Closes Out Regular Season With Home Win

WILLOW RIVER- The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels came from behind twice on Thursday afternoon to defeat the Pine City Dragons by a score of 11-6 in this sectional match-up in Willow River.


The Rebels used a huge nine run fifth inning to put themselves in front 11-3 and went on to win by five runs at home to close out the regular season.


“It’s special to win your last home game of your high school career” Rebel senior Samantha Johnson told Northland Sports Online “We start playoffs next week so we are focusing on that and playing on the road.” Johnson added “We hit the ball and scored some runs which led us to this win at home.”


The Rebels, who trailed 3-2 going into the fifth inning on Thursday saw themselves send 13 batters to the plate as they picked up nine runs on seven hits. Moose Lake-Willow River was also aided by two Dragon errors and two bases on balls.


Chloe Maloney started the inning with a single and scored on a RBI single with one out when Youngberg singled to right center field. Maloney would add a second hit in the inning later on and she also scored another run in the inning for the Rebels.


Two big blows for the Rebels were an RBI double from Samantha Johnson and a two run triple from Jodie Michalski. Samantha Johnson drove in Andrea Youngberg back in the fourth inning which tied the game at 1-1 and Johnson scored on a passed ball later in the inning which put Moose Lake-Willow River in front 2-1.


Rebels senior second baseman Olivia Bennett told Northland Sports Online “It was really special to win your last home game as a senior, it’s something I have thought about, and, WOW this season has gone by so fast.” Bennett added “it’s been three fun years playing on the Rebels varsity team and playing in the nice weather is great.”


The Rebels finish the season with an overall record of 10-6 on the season. They will start the Section 7AA playoffs on Tuesday and currently it appears they will be on the road for the first game of the sectional tournament.
