Polar League Athletes Compete in Conference Meet In Barnum

The Esko Boys and Girls Track teams swept the Polar Conference meet on Wednesday in Barnum. The Eskomo boys team narrowly edged out the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels by a 13 point margin while the Lady Eskomos won the girls meet by almost 80 points Wednesday.

The Eskomo boys finished with 188 points, the Rebels had 175 for second place, Two Harbors was third with 87.5, Cromwell was fourth with 65, and Silver Bay finished fifth with 52. The rest of the boys teams were Wrenshall 31, Cook County 26, McGregor 23.5, Floodwood 14, Barnum 10, and Carlton 9 points.

The Lady Eskomos finished with 228 points for the first place finish, while Two Harbors had 149 for second, Cromwell was third with 72, Moose Lake-Willow River was fourth with 55, and it was Wrenshall and Carlton tying for fifth place with 43 points. The rest of the girls teams totals were Cook County 37, Barnum 24, Floodwood 15, Silver Bay 9, and McGregor had 8.

Individual boys winners included multiple event winners from Moose Lake-Willow River’s Michael Pender in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, Jake Disterhaupt won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and Ben Moonen who won the 800 meter and 1600 meter races. The Rebels also won two of the relay races, the 4×100 meter relay and the 4×400 relay.

The Rebels also had first place finishes in the 400 meter dash where Josh Cisar took first place while Matt Everson won the long jump. Austin Johnson from Cromwell won the Shot Put event Wednesday giving Cromwell their only boys first place finish.

Esko had four first place individual winners including Matt Rengo in the 3200 meter run, Kory Tvedt in the Pole Vault, Klaeton Bubb won the High Jump, and Max Reinertsen won the triple jump. Reinertsen was entered in the long jump also but just did a run-through after he tweaked his foot. The Eskomos also won the 4-x800 meter relay.


Marisa Shady of the Eskomos won three events for the conference champions as she won the 100 and 400 meter dashes along with the long jump. Erika Shady had two first place finishes in the 200 meter dash and she also won the pole vault. Brooke Schramm won the 300 meter hurdles for Esko, Kailee Kiminski placed first in the 1600 meter run, and Kallyn Knutson won the 3200 meter race.

First year Bombers Head Track Coaches Cody and Jacob Gran and the host school of the Polar League Conference meet saw the building efforts of their track program start to pay dividends when freshman Madison Hlavka tied Allison Nowaki of Two Harbors for first place in the high jump. Barnum’s Janna Madden competed in the 3200 meter run which was stacked with elite runners, and while she only finished fifth in the event she broke a school record with a time of 12:39.19

Allie Cahoon of Cromwell won the 800 meter dash for a Cromwell girls first place finish.
