Lumberjacks Rally To Beat Duluth East

The Cloquet Lumberjacks Trent Moe scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an error from the Duluth East Greyhounds as the Lumberjacks come from behind to knock off Duluth East by a score of 5-4 Tuesday at Ed Mettner field in Cloquet.


Cloquet jumped out first Tuesday as the Lumberjacks scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning when a bases loaded walk to Eric Peterson scored Derek Anderson with the first run of the game. A pass ball by Greyhound the Greyhounds catcher allowed Adam Hanson to come across with the second run of the inning.


The score remain 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when the Greyhounds exploded for four runs. The Greyhounds took advantage of three hits and three Cloquet errors to take the 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Cole Johnson singled to start the bottom of the sixth inning and came in to score on an RBI single from Derek Anderson to cut the lead to 4-3 as the sixth inning came to an end.


The Greyhounds moved to the top of the seventh with a one run lead and the Greyhounds could not capitalize on two Lumberjacks errors when Taylor Blundell got Asher Seering to fly out to end the Greyhounds threat of scoring any insurance runs.


With the Lumberjacks trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning; Adam Hanson led off with a double to right field. Hanson then scored as the Lumberjacks next batter Trent Moe singled to bring in Hanson to tie the game at 4-4. Moe moved to second base on a pass ball, and then went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Conklin.


Eric Peterson laid down a nice sacrifice bunt with a 0-1 count that was misplayed allowing Moe to score the winning run from third base as Cloquet picks up the non-conference victory at home Tuesday afternoon.


Taylor Blundell was the winning pitcher for Cloquet; he went seven innings, allowed seven hits, gave up four runs, two of which were earned, he struck out none and walked two in the Lumberjacks win. Asher Seering took the loss for Duluth East; he gave up six hits, five runs, two of which were earned, he walked six and struck out 10 in the loss.


The Lumberjacks, with the victory improve to 12-4 on the season and win their fourth straight game. The Lumberjacks will host Fargo Shanley on Saturday at 11:00 at Mettner field in Cloquet in a wood bat game. Cloquet will face the Esko Eskomos next Tuesday in Esko.


The Greyhounds fall to 8-6 overall on the season; the Greyhounds will be back in action again on Friday when they play in the Bemidji Wood Bat Classic Tournament in Bemidji. The Greyhounds will take on Roseau on Friday, and will play Bemidji and East Grand Forks on Saturday.
