BARNUM- The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels picked up their third straight win on Saturday afternoon by using a six run first inning to lead the Rebels to an 11-2 victory over the Barnum Bombers in Barnum.

The Rebels used four hits and four walks to come up with the big first inning as the Rebels pushed six runs across and never looked back to pick up a big Polar League Conference victory. The Rebels added one more run in the third, and two each in the fifth and seventh innings as the Rebels win their third straight game.

“We are starting to come around now” Head Coach Lyle Halverson told Northland Sports Online, “We starting to hit, and our pitching has been pretty good all season long; so if we can continue to cut down on errors we could make some noise down the stretch.” Halverson added “Those early losses to Cook County and Carlton cost us the Polar League title, but we will be ready when the playoffs begin.”

Darren Grukowski led the Rebels as he went 3-4 on the afternoon including a double and three runs scored. Jake Christopherson was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored, BJ Young also finished with two hits on the afternoon for Moose Lake-Willow River who finished with ten hits on the day.

The Bombers scored their runs in the bottom of the first inning when Zach Carlson scored on a error by the Rebels to make it 6-1 after the first inning, and they second run came when Sam Kovanen scored after he walked with two outs, he moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Chase Peterson.

Brad Fossum was the winning pitcher for the Rebels; Donald Sarrela took the loss for the Bombers Saturday afternoon. Fossum gave up two runs only one of which was earned, and allowed three hits, struck out four and walked only one runner. Alex Stephan came in relief for the Rebels in the bottom of the fifth inning.

With the victory on Saturday, the Rebels improve to 6-5 overall on the season and they will be back in action Monday when they travel to Virginia to take on the Blue Devils. Tuesday the Rebels will be home as they will face the Esko Eskomos in a Polar League contest.

The Bombers fall to 4-7 on the season and they are in action Monday when they face East Central in Askov, and on Tuesday they will take on the Tigers of Rush City in Rush City Tuesday night.
