It appears as if the gap is closing between the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys tennis team and the top tier tennis teams in the Northland. On Thursday afternoon, the Lumberjacks still lost to Virginia, but the results show that CEC is getting closer to reeling in one of the big dogs on the local tennis scene. End result? Virginia 4 CEC 3.

CEC got a pair of wins in singles play from #2 player John Scheuer and #4 player Christian Pritchett. Scheuer downed Mark Skube 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 and Pritchett defeated Aaron Peterson 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

The Lumberjacks also got a nice win at #3 doubles play from Ben Tomhave and Nick Tomhave when the beat the Virginia duo of Ricky Sipila and Andy Callister 6-4, 6-3.

CEC’s #1 singles player, Sean Kedrowski, fell to Blair Seitz and #3 singles player Tanner Webster dropped a decision to Joe Skandis.

At #1 doubles the CEC team of Ryan Willgohs and Rob Sobczak and the CEC #2 doubles team of Luke Heine and Joey Gotchnik also lost a tight doubles match.

The Jacks will host Hermantown on Friday at 4:15pm
