PROCTOR — Alex Doherty’s suicide squeeze bunt scored Kevin Huybrecht’s go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as Ashland defeated Proctor 2-1 in a Lake Superior Conference baseball game at Proctor.

Huybrecht singled to lead off the 10th, and a walk put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out, and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Doherty. Proctor then turned a nifty pitcher-to-catcher-to-first baseman double play on a comebacker to end the inning.

Proctor took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Cody Dolsen singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Joe Carter, who advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Nelson. Paul Hegstrom’s groundout to the right side moved Carter to third base, and Carter scored on Evan Scherber’s single.

Ashland tied the score 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning. Luke Harnish singled, and advanced two bases on a stolen base/passed ball combination. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Henry.

The winning pitcher was John Selehen, in relief of starter Henry. Selehen pitched three and two-thirds innings of shutout relief. He allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Henry pitched the first six and one-third innings. He allowed one run on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. The two Ashland pitchers combined on a four-hitter.

Proctor’s reliever Matt Dolsen (0-1, 3.50 ERA) picked up the loss. Dolsen, making his varsity pitching debut, allowed one run on one hit, one walk, and one intentional walk with no strikeouts in two innings. Proctor starter Jake Lewis pitched the first eight innings. He allowed one run on six hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.

Huybrecht and Brett Hulmer had two hits each for Ashland.

Evan Scherber was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Proctor.

Ashland (6-4) is in the St. Croix Falls Tournament this weekend.

Proctor (4-2) is ranked #19 in Minn. Class AA. The Rails host Mora on Saturday at noon.
