The Hermantown Hawks boys baseball team remained unbeaten on Thursday as the Hawks defeated the Duluth Denfeld Hunters by a score of 12-2 in five innings. The Hawks used two big innings on Thursday when they scored seven runs in the first inning and added five more runs in the second inning to separate themselves from the Hunters and pick up the victory at home.

The Hawks seven runs in the first inning came off of just two hits from the Hawks: they were assisted by four Hunter errors in the inning and three bases on balls. Joe Muench and Lane LeGarde had the two hits in the inning for the Hawks. Hermantown would add five more runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Again the Hawks were assisted by three more errors from the Hunters, and Jared Thomas and LeGarde each had singles in the inning and Kevin Folman had a double in the inning for the Hawks as they built up the 12-0 lead after two innings.

The Hawks held their 12-0 lead until the top of the third inning, when Dylan Rocklin reached on an error and scored on a double off the bat of Jared Amundson to cut the lead to 12-1. Denfeld added one more run when Travis Samuelson scored on a RBI single from Chase Schaub.

The one run in the top of the fourth inning was the last the Hunters could muster as the Hawks went on to the twelve run win in five innings. Denfeld’s efforts to cut the lead to less than 10 and extend the game ended when the Hawks turned a spectacular double play to end the game.

Kevin Folman was the winning pitcher Thursday as he pitched five complete innings, he allowed two runs, 4 hits, and had 5 strikeouts on the day. He didn’t allow a walk for Hermantown. Chase Schaub was the losing pitcher for the Hunters, he allowed twelve runs, five hits and walked four. His defense behind him committed six errors.

The Hermantown Hawks improve to 7-0 on the season and they are back in action again on Tuesday when they will take on Duluth Marshall at UMD in a Lake Superior Conference contest. The Hunters fall to 3-5 on the season and they will play at Superior on Tuesday as they will face the Spartans in a Lake Superior Conference match-up as well.
