In two games on Tuesday, the St. Scholastica softball team allowed just one hit and two base runners in defeating Northwestern College 3-0 and Crown College 21-0 in five innings at Kenwood Field.

In the first game against Northwestern College (15-19, 10-7 UMAC), Darcy Roach retired the first 20 batters she faced until with 2-2 count and two outs in the seventh Briana Rodgers ripped a double to right center. It would be Roach’s only hit she would allow on the day as she finished the game facing 22 total batters with 10 strikeouts on only 65 pitches. Roach struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced.

Offensively, the Saints were also held in check for much of the game with Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) having the only hits of the game through the first five innings with a pair of triples and a single. It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the sixth when Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) found hole on left side of the infield with two outs to plate Jenna Germscheid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River HS). Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn. /Armstrong HS) then followed with a RBI single and Schiro would later score on a Northwestern error to make the final score 3-0.

In game two against Crown College (0-21, 0-17 UMAC), Andrea Wick (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) allowed just one base runner in five innings and that came on an error as she pitched a no-hitter in CSS’s 21-0 victory over the Storm in five innings. Wick struck out six, facing 16 batters for her second collegiate win and the 18th no-hitter in program history.

The Saints had two big innings offensively with 10 runs in the second inning and 11 runs in the fifth inning.

In the second inning, Roach led off with a solo home run to left field and Schiro followed with an inside-the-park home run down the right field line. In the fifth inning, Bonnie Kowalczyk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls HS) hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard and later in the inning had a three-run double.

Schiro and Ally Sweeney (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth Central HS) each recorded three hits in the victory. Schiro, Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn. /Wayzata HS) and Barb Malyuk (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS) added two RBIs.

The Saints (23-8, 14-1 UMAC) will have a couple of impromptu home games over the next couple days. Tomorrow CSS will face Northland College at Kenwood Field at noon. The contest is a completion of a suspended game on April 15th with the Saints up 5-3 with two outs in the top of the third. CSS will then take on Martin Luther College on Thursday at home for one game at 5:45 p.m. That is a make-up of the April13th doubleheader where the teams were only able to get one game in.
