Proctor Notches 8-5 Road Win Over Greenway

Proctor defeated Greenway 8-5 in a non-conference baseball game at Nashwauk. The game site was moved due to wet grounds at Marble. Winning pitcher Ben Nelson (2-0, 0.82 ERA) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk in a complete game effort. He had seven strikeouts.

Proctor jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a lead-off double by Jimmy Merling and an RBI double by Ryan McCarthy. The Rails had six hits and scored five runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 6-0. The inning featured RBI doubles by Evan Scherber and Ian Scherber, and a two-RBI double by Merling.

Greenway sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Raiders scored five runs on four hits, one walk, a sacrifice fly, and two Proctor errors to bring the score to 6-5.

Proctor scored two insurance runs in the seventh on sacrifice flies by Jesse Scanlon and Cody Dolsen.

Merling was two-for-five with two runs, two doubles, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. McCarthy was two-for-four with a double and an RBI. Jake Lewis was two-for-two with two runs. Scanlon was one-for-three with two RBIs. Ian Scherber was one-for-three with two runs, a double, and one RBI.

Greenway’s Derek Bundy was two-for-four.

Losing pitcher Darrick Finke allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and four walks in six innings. He had three strikeouts.

Proctor scored eight runs on 11 hits, with three errors and 12 left on base. Greenway scored five runs on seven hits, with one error and four left on base.

Proctor (4-1) hosts Ashland on Thursday. Greenway (4-4) hosts International Falls on Thursday also. The Rails are now 4-1 on the season. Their only loss was in a tight one run 4-3 game against rival Hermantown.
