Braun Park was host to the 10th Annual Ashley Abrahamson Memorial softball tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The tournament honored the memory of Abrahamson, who died in a tragic car accident at the age of 13 on April 13, 2000.

The two day tournament featured nine U-12 teams and eight U-14 teams. Saturday’s schedule consisted of pool play for both the U-12 and U-14 divisions.

At midday Saturday, all of the players set aside softball to participate in a parade of teams. Athletes and coaches from all of the tournament teams formed a semi-circle in the infield behind the Abrahamson family while Ashley Abrahamson’s cousins, Danielle and Haley Sobczak, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. In addition, Ashley’s classmates Sarah Tondryk, Tyler Korby and Sam Battaglia were on hand to share in the moment.

In the bracket style playoffs on Sunday, the U-12 Division, Duluth Thunder beat Proctor Green 8-3 in the championship game. For third place, Cloquet Bridal Elegance beat Hermantown #1 12-11. And for the consolation champions, Duluth Magic beat Hermantown #2 12-1.

In the U-14 Division, North Area beat Proctor Storm 6-1 for the championship. For third place, Sawyer beat Esko 8-3 and for the consolation championship, Virginia beat Duluth Swat 4-2.

Also on Sunday, the Ashley Award was presented to one player from each team. The Ashley Award is given to players who exemplify all of Ashley’s qualities: positive attitude, hard-working, good sportsmanship, love for the game, and a team player.

The young athletes receiving the award were: Geena Meger (Duluth Magic), Gabby Nordman (Duluth Thunder), Elizabeth Carlson (Hermantown #1), Sydney Johnson (Hermantown #2), Jessica Anderson (Carlton Blue), Hailey Ulvi (Cloquet Northwoods Credit Union), Mariah Berner (Duluth Swat), Kim Rice (Virginia), Manny Sandoval (Sawyer), Holly Stanaway (Proctor Green), Becca Snyder (North Area), Jessie Stansloski (Carlton White), Jade Benko (Cloquet Bridal Elegance), Morgan Pera (Esko), Cecelia Everson (Proctor Storm), and Breanne Baker (Cloquet Siebold Photography).
