Superior Trips Up Cloquet Boys

The Cloquet Lumberjacks, who were coming off a double-overtime win over Duluth Marshall on Tuesday night, saw their momentum stop as the Superior Spartans picked up a Lake Superior Conference win in Cloquet Friday night by a score of 69-47.


Through the first six plus minutes of the first half it was Superior and Cloquet trading baskets and leads. Dillon Johnson’s 3-pointer at the 13:27 mark gave Cloquet its largest lead of the game at 11-6.


After Adam Laine connected on two free throws giving Cloquet a 13-12 lead, it was going to be the last lead Cloquet had in the game as the Spartans went on an 17-4 run to distance themselves with a 29-17 score.


As the first half was wearing down, Cloquet got the Superior lead down to seven points when Sean Ferrell connected on a field goal to cut the lead to 31-24; but Superior added one more basket and the first half ended with Cloquet trailing 33-24.


The second half saw Superior score the first eight points of the half and built a 41-24 lead. It was a 22-7 run to start the second half as the Spartans led 55-31 midway through the second half and a lead which Cloquet could not recover from.


The Lumberjacks were led by sophomore Adam Laine, who finished with 20 points on the night. Dillon Johnson added 10, Zach Peterson and Jake Bushey both scored 5, it was Sean Ferrell finishing with 4, Trent Moe had 2, and it was Tanner Louhela adding 1 point.


The Spartans were led by Cody Hunt, who finished with 19 points; it was 12 points for Nick Melhum, Derek Kotney added 11, Erik Tunney, and Tony Valentine each had 7, Jordan Hughes scored 5, Spencer Urban and Colton Lorenz each had 3, and it was Ben Ericson finishing with 2 point for Superior.


The Lumberjack’s now fall to 8-16 on the season, they will be home Monday night when they will host Two Harbors in a non-conference contest, and again on Friday night when they finish up the regular season at home against Hibbing.

Superior improves to 12-8 overall on the season and improves to 6-2 in conference play.
