Grand Rapids Girls Make Section 7AAA Interesting With Win Over Hermantown

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks made the Section 7AAA standing very interesting as the Hawks and the Thunderhawks battled Tuesday night in a section match-up in which Grand Rapids defeated Hermantown by a score of 50-34.


Hermantown, who was currently seeded second entering the night with a QRF ranking of 29th but it was the Thunderhawks improving themselves with the home victory. Grand Rapids entering was ranked fourth in the section and had a QRF ranking of 33rd.


North Branch who was ranked 32nd and seeded third in the section is off until Friday night when they will face Chisago Lakes, which means the section seeding may not be determined until Saturday morning.


Grand Rapids jumped out to a 10 point half time lead at 32-22, and then extended their lead in the second half as they knock off the Hawks at home. The Thunderhawks took advantage of 27 trips to the free throw line compared to only seven for the Hawks.


Hermantown was led by Rachel Hoium who finished with 11 points, Nicole Kucza added 9, Kessiah Mosier finished with 8, Emily Neumann chipped in with 4 points, and it was Carmen Bergstedt ending the Hawks scoring with 2 points.


The Thunderhawks were led by Jessa Sondergaard, who finished with a game high 24 points, Kenzie Kane scored 10, it was Katie Anderson finishing with 5, Brittany Koss added 3, Taylor Kane and Jordan both chipped in with 3, and Karley Peterson added 1 point.


Hermantown finishes the regular season 16-10 overall and have lost their last four games. Hermantown finished 8-3 in sectional play and they were 8-2 in Lake Superior Conference play.

The Thunderhawks improve to 9-13 overall on the season and will be in action Thursday night at home when they host Bemidji; then again on Friday when they travel to Eveleth to face the Golden Bears in their final regular season game.
