The Cloquet Silver Bullets opened their summer girls’ softball season with a 7-1 victory over Outdoor Advantage on Monday night. Despite a roster of players that could play at the 14 and under age group, the Bullets proved they could compete at the U-18 level by taking the win.

After taking back-to-back state championships in U-12 and U-14 softball, the Cloquet Silver Bullets moved up to play in the U-16 age group last season where they performed well. Now, Silver Bullets have moved into the U-18 age ranks even though their roster is comprised mainly of players who are in the U-16 to U-14 level age group.

Rachel Smith, Denise Rodd and Haley Sobczak combined to pick up the pitching win. After giving up one run in the first inning, the pitching staff recorded 18 straight outs at one point during the game.

Katie Schulz led the offensive attack by recording two base hits and scoring twice. Denise Rodd tripled in Schulz for the eventual winning run as the Bullets emphasized a fast-paced attack that included bunting, stealing bases and timely hitting.

Kayla Mesessa also was impressive with a pair of bunts for a base hit and Rachel Smith provided a double in the bottom of the second inning to score Schulz to tie the game.
