Wrens Snap 41 Game Regular Season Winless Streak with 78-53 Win

The Wrenshall Wrens snapped a 41 game regular season losing streak Monday night when they picked up a 78-53 victory over the Greenway Raiders. The Wrens last regular season win was a victory over Cotton back in 2010.


The Wrens last victory came last season in the Section 7A playoffs over the Carlton Bulldogs which avenged two regular season losses to the Bulldogs last year. The Wrens won Monday’s non-conference game at home.


Pat Gustafson exploded for 38 points including three 3-pointers as the Wrens pick up the 25 point win. Both teams only made 10 trips to the free throw line and both teams made three of their 10 free throws.


Following Gustafson in scoring was Peter Granholm who added 14 points, Derek Duncan had 8, Mitch Frank scored 5, Jack Dolter finished with 4, and it was Matt O’Conner and Jared Kittle closing the Wrenshall scoring with 2 points on the night.


The Raiders were led by a duo of players, Nate Emerson and Scott Webb who both scored 21 points, Ben Skaar added 7, Ben Petrich chipped in with 5, and it was AJ Butterfield who closed the Greenway scoring with 4 points in the loss.


The Wrenshall Wrens move to 1-17 on the season, they will be home on Thursday night when they will host the Hill City Hornets and then travel up the shore to Grand Marais on Friday to take on Cook County in a Polar League contest.


Greenway falls to 2-16 on the season and they are back in action again Tuesday night when they face the Floodwood Polar Bears in a sectional battle at Floodwood High School. They will also face Eveleth Gilbert at home on Thursday night.
