Local Athletes Compete At The State “A” Track Meet

ST. PAUL – The single “A” portion of the state track and field meet got underway Friday afternoon at Hamline University in St. Paul with 661 athletes competing. Several schools from the Northland were well represented with Esko heading the list, entering a total of 24 athletes.

Kenny Schofield of Cotton made the big news of the day by becoming the 2009 Class
A state champion in the triple jump. Schofield turned in a jump of 45′-1-1/2″ to take first place honors and better his second place finish from last year, recapturing the title he won as a sophomore. Schofield topped second place finisher Laquone Robinson’s best toss by two inches.

In other boys ,the Proctor boys 4×400 team earned the final qualifying spot in the finals with a time of 3:37.77, assuring them a medal and all-state honors. The Two Harbors 4×200 relay team narrowly missed qualifying with a time of 135.99

Jordan Smith of Cromwell also just missed the finals in the boys 800m run by .35 seconds posting a tenth place time of 2:01.72. Teammate Jordan Suhonen finished in 14th place with a time of 2:05.00

Other local finishers were Phil Wirtz of Esko finishing 13th in the pole vault with a jump of 12 ft. Esko freshman Jackson Lindquist of Esko finished 15th in the 3200 meter run.
Right behind Lindquist was Floodwood’s Aaron Larva in 16th place.

On the girls side, Esko will advance all four relay teams to the finals, guaranteeing them All-State honors and medals in the four events. The 4×200 and 4×800 teams were not required to participate in prelims while the 4×400 meter team finished third with a 4:08.61 effort. Esko’s 4×100 team finished sixth in the prelims; however, they finished in a school record time of 50.46 seconds. Team members include senior Kelli Rengo, sophomore Alyson Glumac, freshman Delany Pearson, and junior Katie Tonner.

Natasha Dragicevich of Moose Lake-Willow River qualified for the finals in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, posting a time of 15.63 to garner the number six seed in the 100m hurdles and 46.18 for a number eight seed in the 300 hurdles.

Leah Nordvall of Barnum qualified for the ninth spot in the 200 meter dash with a run of 26.06, she finished 15th in the 100 meter dash, despite posting a very respectable 12.79 second time. Nordvall missed out on a medal in the long jump by finishing in tenth place, jumping 16’-9-3/4”, just ¼” short of ninth place Mariah Berg of Bagley/Fosston. Berg’s Bagley/Fosston teammate, sophomore Analisa Huschle won the event, setting a class “A” and all time state record with a19’-02.25” jump.

Other local track finishers were Ashley Collman of Cromwell finishing 16th in the 400 meters, Kate Shelerud of Esko finishing 10 in the 800m, Esko’s eight grader Kallyn Knutson finished 14th in the 3200m run and Carlton freshman Lindsey Dahl-Holm finished in 16th place. Esko’s Janae Beaudot got onto the medal stand in the high jump with a ninth place 5-0” jump while Alycia Bonneville of Barnum finished 16th in the discus with a throw of 103-0 feet.

New class “A” state records were set in the 100 and 200-meter dashes on Friday. Senior Skylar Jackson of Frazee set the mark in the 100m with a 10.81 performance while Cameron Boy from Jordan established a new time in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.62 seconds.
