Cloquet Girls Fall To Thunderhawks

The Grand Rapid Thunderhawks knocked off the Cloquet Lumberjacks for the second time this season by a score of 38-23 in a section 7AAA match-up. The first time these two teams met, it was a forty point win back in December 65-25.


Friday night it was a much lower scoring game as Cloquet slowed the pace of the game as the Thunderhawks picked up the 15 point win at Cloquet High School on Friday night.


The Thunderhawks jumped out to an early first half lead as the Lumberjacks found themselves trailing Grand Rapids by a score of 22-9. The Lumberjacks and the Thunderhawks played it much closer in the second half with Grand Rapids outscoring Cloquet 16-14 as they went on to the 15 point win.


The Lumberjacks were led by Morgan Jensen and Kenzie Rathe who both finished with 5 points in the loss, Avery Bieri and Carri Zeadow both chipped in with 4 points, Morgan Warbalow added 3, and Courtney Thompson finished with 2 points.


The Thunderhawks were led by Jessa Sonderaard who scored 12 points, Jordan Olson, Taylor Kane, and Megan Allen each finished with 5 points, Kaitlyn Olson scored 4, Karley Peterson chipped in with 3 points, and it was Nataya Chandler and Brittany Koss both closing with 2 points.


The Lumberjacks fall to 7-14 on the season and they are back in action again on Thursday when they will host the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels in a non-conference match-up. Then on Friday night they will travel to Hibbing to face the Bluejackets in a sectional battle.


The Thunderhawks improve to 8-12 on the season and they are back in action again on Thursday when they host Pequot Lakes in a non-conference game. Grand Rapids improves to 5-3 in sectional play and find themselves currently in fourth place in the section standings.
