Strong goaltending, timely scoring and scoring on the power play provided plenty of punch for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team on Thursday night when they downed Forest Lake 4-0 in the first round of the Section 7AA playoffs.

Lumberjack goalie Alyssa Acheson made 28 saves to record the shutout, the eighth for CEC this season, and Carley Esse added a pair of goals from her position on defense to help the Jacks take the home win.

Senior Kelly Carlson scored the only goal of the first period with Emily Gustafson and Dalyce Gustafson providing the assists at 9:43 as the Jacks went up 1-0.

After a scoreless second period, the Lumberjacks pumped in three goals in the final period, including two power play goals, to end any hopes of a Forest Lake comeback. Esse rammed home the first goal at 2:32 on the power play with Carlson and Caitlyn Lilly providing the assists and it was 2-0 for the Jacks. CEC went up 3-0 at 11:06 on another goal by Esse with the assist going to Lilly on the power play. The Lumberjacks final goal was scored at 16:05 by Kristi Konietzko unassisted into an empty net.

The Lumberjacks tossed 34 shots on Forest Lake netminder Abbi White who made 30 saves. CEC also went 2-for-5 on the power play and held the Rangers scoreless in their five opportunities including some that were late in the third period.

CEC will now move on to play in the sectional semi-finals at Grand Rapids/Greenway on Saturday at 2:30. The Lightning advanced on Thursday night with a 5-1 win over Princeton.
