Denfeld Wins Big Over Cloquet Boys

The Denfeld Hunters used a huge first half as the Hunters blew past Cloquet to come away with a 76-48 win Thursday night at Cloquet High School. The Hunters had four players finish in double figures as they went on to win this Lake Superior Conference contest by 28 points.


The Hunters jumped out early and never looked back as the Hunters took advantage of 33 Lumberjack turnovers that resulted in the Hunters outscoring Cloquet by 20 points off of turnovers. The Hunters rolled out to a halftime lead of 34-13 as Cloquet shot only 28% from the floor in the first half.


The second half saw Cloquet shoot better but it was too late as the Hunters as built a lead that was too big for a Lumberjack comeback. Cloquet finished shooting 42% for the game. Denfeld also took advantage of 10 steals they had on the night; which helped lead to the Denfeld victory.


Cloquet was led by Trent Moe as the senior forward finished with 12 points on the night. Adam Laine score 7, Dillon Johnson and Gavin Takkunen each poured in 6 points, Zach Peterson scored 5, Jake Bushey and Zach Gerlach each added 4, Maxx Brenner and Erik Swanson each scored 2 points.


The Hunters had four players in double figures, led by Andrew Laughlin who scored 18, Derek Meger finished with 15, Sergei Hanka and Sam Humes each scored 13. Cal Anderson scored 6 points, it was Graham Whiting with 4, DJ Richards scored 3, Carter Bagley and Cory Bolen each added 2.


Cloquet falls to 7-12 on the season and they will be in action again on Saturday night when they face North Branch at North Branch High School. The Hunters improve to 15-4 on the season and they will be home on Friday night when they host Grand Rapids in a sectional match-up which could decide the number one seed in section 7AAA.
