CLOQUET – A four goal outburst in the second period helped the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team to a 4-0 win Friday night over Cambridge-Isanti at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet. The four unanswered second period goals coupled with a 16 save performance by CEC netminder Katie Beckman sealed the 4-0 shutout win for the Lumberjacks on parent’s night.

After a scoreless first period Emily Gustafson got the Jacks on the board with an unassisted goal which was the result of a hard working never say quite effort to poke the puck between the pipe and the right side of the Bluejackets goalie at the 1:17 mark of the first period.

Less than a minute later Haley Ketola continued the second period onslaught with when she tallied a goal at the 2:13 mark with an assist from Carley Esse. Esse would get a goal of her own when she blasted a shot from the high slot past the C-I goaltender and into the back of the net. The unassisted goal at the 13:37 mark gave the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead. The seniors got represented on senior night by Kelly Carlson who finished an Emily Gustafson pass for the fourth goal of the period with just 19.4 second remaining in the period to close out the scoring on the night.

CEC received yet another solid performance from Beckman for the Jacks seventh shut-out of the season. A.J. Smith stopped 34 of 38 shots for the Bluejackets in the loss.

The Jacks appear to be peaking and getting everyone back healthy just at the right time for the playoffs. They will close out the regular season with a home game against Hibbing-Chisholm on Monday before beginning the playoffs on February 9. The Jacks, who will likely receive the #3 seed and host a home playoff game, will find out who their first round opponent will be when the seedings are determined on Wednesday. Northland Sports Online will post those seedings as soon as they become available.
