The Cloquet boys basketball team made sure homecoming night would be a festive one for Cloquet by jumping out to an early 16-6 lead over Mesabi East and cruised to an 81-43 home win on Friday night.

Good perimeter shooting from the outside and a dominating inside performance by Adam Laine helped the Jacks take a 38-22 lead and have the game all but put away at the break. For the game Laine finished with a game high 11 rebounds, seven of which were on offense.

As good as the first half was for the Jacks; hard work produced an even better second half where Cloquet’s 43 points more than doubled up the Giants 21 second half points. Less than four minutes into the second stanza the Jacks increased the lead to 25 points on a Dillon Johnson 3-pointer. At one point the lead grew to as much as 40 points before Cloquet settled in on the 81-43 win.

For the game Cloquet shot 45.5% from the field and went an impressive 80% from the line on 12 for15 free throw shooting.

Cloquet ended with four players in double figures, led by Laine with 17 points. Dillon Johnson was right behind Laine with 16 points and Zach Peterson followed Johnson with 15 total points. Trent Moe also hit double digits with 12 points on the night. Erik Swanson scored nine points on 50% 3-6 3-point shooting. Others helping out the Jacks were Gavin Takkunen with five points, Jake Bushey with three and Zach Gerlach and Tanner Louhela with two points each.

Mesabi East was led by Dan Settimi, who accounted for nearly half of the Giants points with 20; no other Giant scored more than six points.

Congratulations go out to Kellin Lamirande and Maddie Kiehn, who were crowned as 2012 Lumberjack king and queen.
