A six-goal second period eruption helped send the Hermantown Hawks to their 15th victory of the season on Saturday when the Hawks smacked Monticello Area 7-1 in boys hockey.

After Monticello opened the scoring at 5:01 of the first period the Hawks responded in kind with a goal at 16:09 when Neal Pionk scored with assists to Jake Zeleznikar and Jared Thomas, making the score was 1-1 after one period.

The second period was a dream for the Hawks with their six goal outburst and at best it was a nightmare for Monticello. At 2:26 Travis Koepke scored an unassisted goal for Hermantown and the rout was on. Koepke’s goal was followed by a goal from Bo Gronseth at 6:53 with Owen Stauber and Brian LeBlanc assisting. Then at 9:02 it was the first of two goals from Jared Thomas with Jared Kolquist and Chris Benson assisting. At 9:36 Andrew Mattson pumped in a goal for the Hawks with Thomas assisting and that was followed by a Zeleznikar goal from Gronseth at 9:51. That was a three goal spurt in a matter of 49 seconds. Thomas ended the scoring for Hermantown with three seconds remaining in the second period.

The third period was scoreless and was played in running time. Hermantown pumped 47 shots on Monticello goalie Aaron Boros who finished with 40 saves, while Hawks goalie Zach Edgerton finished with 10 saves on 11 shots.

For the season the Hawks are a perfect 15-0, ranked second in the state, and it was their 19th straight regular season game without a loss. The win was also the 400th for longtime Hawks coach Bruce Plante.
