Erick Tunell and Cody Hunt combined for 39 points for Superior in the Spartans 64-53 win Tuesday night over the Hermantown Hawks in Hermantown. Tunell finished with 21 and Hunt had 18 points in the Spartan victory.

The Spartans took a 34-26 halftime lead and then proceeded to outscore the Hawks by 30-27 in the second half to take the victory in the Lake Superior Conference.

Superior also got 13 points from Derek Kontny, three points each from Colton Lorenz and Jordan Hughes and a pair of points from Spencer Urban, Ben Erickson and Bryan Sanders.

“We did some very nice things on both ends in the first half and actually had a 6 point lead at one point stated Hermantown Head Coach Mike Pothast. “Much of that was off of the inside scoring and play of Kole Zuidmulder. He was very aggressive on the offensive glass and finished a few “and one” plays.” The freshman finished with 13 points on the night.

Hermantown had four players in double figures. Corey Anderson finished with 14 points, Kole Zuidmulder added the previously mentioned 13 and both Kevin Folman and Spencer Johnson had 11 points. Parker Anderson and Alex Schmies contributed two points to the Hawks cause.

“It was nice to see some balanced scoring again with 4 guys in double digits; still, until we find a way to erase those 2-3 min stretches where we are just not good enough on both ends, we are going to keep putting ourselves in tough spots” explained Pothast.

Both teams hit 18 shots from the field, but Superior scored 10 more points from the charity stripe to preserve the win.

The loss is the third for the Hawks, who started the season on a 6-0 run. They will look to get back on track on Friday night when they travel to Marshall to take on the Hilltoppers. Superior improved to 6-3 overall on the season and 3-1 in the Lake Superior Conference.
