Lady Lumberjacks Pick Up Dominating Win

The Lady Lumberjacks of Cloquet had found some tough going early in this 2011-2012 winter sports season; against some stiff competition they had dropped five straight games to open the season. On Friday night the Lumberjacks got in the win column for the first time this season as the Lumberjack’s defeated the Deer River Warriors by a score of 57-20 at Deer River High School.


The Lumberjacks opened up the first half building a 15 point 26-11 lead at halftime, the Lumberjacks continued to roll in the second half as they again outscored the Warriors by a 31-9 margin in the second half alone. The Lumberjacks used a balanced scoring attack as Cloquet had eight players score in the victory Friday night.


Cloquet was led by Krista Schmitz on Friday with the Junior Guard tallying 11 points in the Lumberjack win. Avery Bieri added 9, Kenzie Rathe and Morgan Jensen both finished with 8 points on the night. Grace Sinisalo added 7 points, while Carri Zeadow and Amy Campbell each chipped in with 6 points and it was Jordan Hanson adding 2 points for Cloquet.


The Warriors were led by Donna Velishek, who finished with 9 points on the night. Kelsey Fairbanks, Tali Plate, Angelina Villeneuve, Maggie Swanson, and Kristen Vickerman all scored 2 points in the Deer River loss. Caitlin Fairbanks finished the Warriors scoring with 1 point in the night for Deer River.


The Lumberjacks improve to 1-5 on the season and they are back in action again on Tuesday night when they will face the Hermantown Hawks. Hermantown is currently 7-0 on the season and sitting atop the Lake Superior Conference Standings. The Lumberjacks will host the Hawks at Cloquet High School.


The Deer River Warriors fall to 1-5 on the season with the loss at home, the Warriors hope to rebound on Tuesday night when they are home again as they will host the Hibbing Bluejackets in a conference match-up.
