ML-WR Boys Come Up Just Short Against Virginia

In a rematch of last season Section 7AA championship game, it was the Virginia Blue Devils once again prevailing over the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels by a score 52-49. The Blue Devils who defeated the Rebels last March at UMD made two straight wins over the Rebels in this sectional match up at Virginia High School.


The Rebels who entered the match-up with a 1-1 record were hoping to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Rebels who fell to Floodwood in a Polar League match-up on Friday night by a score of 63-58 after opening the season with a 40 point win over East Central 73-33. The defending Polar League Champions now fall to 1-2 after the loss Tuesday night.


The Rebels who are still without the services of senior post Taylor Mattison could not stop the balanced scoring attack of Virginia, who had four players in double figures. The Blue Devils who were 2-1 entering the match-up Tuesday night had a balanced attack as they went on to win by three points at home. The Rebels, who finished with seven 3-pointers couldn’t counter the balanced scoring attack in the end.


The Rebels were led in scoring by Ezra Szczyrbak who finished with 11 points on the night, Caleb Koecher added 10, Tony Adamczak ended with 7, Matt Mach and Isaac Coil both had 6 points, Nathan Koeck added 4, while Andy Olson pitched in with 3, and it was Jake Disterhaupt who finished with 2 points on the night.


The Blue Devils were led by Patrick Jarvi and Tyler Wilson, who both finished with 12 points, Jordan Lindholm chipped in with 11, Joe Geiselman added 10 points, while Cade Stackpool finished with 4, and it was Cole Skadsem who rounded out the Virginia scoring with 3 points in the victory Tuesday night.


The Rebels will look to rebound on Friday night when they will face the Cromwell Cardinals in a Polar League match-up at Cromwell High School. The Blue Devils will look to move to 4-1 on Friday night when they play host to the Greenway Raiders.
