It was the kind of game the University of Minnesota Duluth women’s basketball team wants to play, but not the right result.

The Bulldogs (2-1) lost out in a close defensive battle Saturday, taking their first loss in a 65-64 overtime thriller at Colorado School of Mines.

After coming back from 10 points down midway through the second half to knot it at 52 with just 11 seconds, UMD almost did it again in overtime, nearly erasing an eight-point deficit in a span of 27 seconds, but coming up just short.

Junior guard Courtney Doucette knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the final 27 seconds of overtime, and junior guard Kaiya Sygulla added four points in the same frame, including a jumper with one second remaining to cut the lead to one.

The Orediggers (1-3) out-shot UMD from the floor, hitting 39 percent of their shots compared to the Bulldogs’ 28.3 percent. Doucette led UMD with 18 points, shooting 5-13 from the field, including four 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Katrina Newman added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Sygulla finished with ten points.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded Mines 49-38, freshman guard Alyssa Kerkhoff grabbing seven rebounds to go with five points. Senior forward Emma Van Winkle scored five points, including the game-tying basket to force overtime, and added five boards.
