The softball season for the Moose Lake Willow River Rebels came to a halt on Thursday afternoon as the Rebels fell to the number one seeded Hermantown Hawks by a score of 8-1. The Rebels entering the game knew they would have to play a perfect game in order to upset the Hawks; but that would not happen as the Rebels fell by seven runs.

“We needed to have our best game to beat them,” head coach Katie Collier told Northland Sports Online. “We did the one thing that hurt us all year long and that was giving the other team too many second and third chances.” The Rebels committed a total of five errors throughout the game that cost them any chance of staying with the Hawks.

Junior Hawks’ pitcher Megan Mullen was dominant on the mound Thursday, as the Rebels could only manage one run. The one run for the Rebels came in the third inning when, with one out, Hillary Peterson singled to left field. Peterson moved to second on a pass ball by Hermantown and score on a single later in the inning by Emily Wasche. Moose Lake-Willow Rivers only other hit was a single in the fourth inning by Kim Ergen.

The Rebels would only have four base runners all game. Besides the three hits, Emily Wasche would have a walk, but she was thrown out later in the sixth inning trying to steal second base. Katie Youngberg was the losing pitcher in the game. Youngberg gave up the eight Hermantown runs, three of
which were earned. Youngberg walked three and had two strikeouts.

The Rebels season ends with a 12-5 record overall, matching their best season in several years. Moose Lake-Willow River will graduate four seniors of this year’s team, Amanda Larson, Samantha Juhl, Sonya Cervenka, and Hillary Peterson. NSO would like to wish the best to these graduating seniors.
