The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College women’s softball team continues a torrid recruiting pace for the upcoming 2012 season. Head coach Kerry Rodd has added two more players for the upcoming season which brings the total number of freshman to 11.

“We got a verbal commitment from Savannah Hanson who will transfer in from UMD after the fall semester,” said Rodd. “Savannah was a solid player at Esko and we look forward to having her on our campus.”

The Thunder also announced that Two Harbors shortstop Cammie Triggs will attend the school and play ball next spring.

“I had a lot of chances to see Cammie play this spring and summer and she is an exceptional player,” Rodd stated. “In summer ball I had the chance to coach against her and I was impressed with her abilities.”

Rodd has been on a wildfire recruiting tour since last season ended and despite what seemed to be a lean year of seniors in the area he has what appears to be a solid class coming in to compete for starting positions.

“There were not a lot of seniors on our area rosters this year,” mentioned Rodd. “We have really had to work hard finding kids, but with the help of a lot of the area softball coaches it has given us a chance to bring in some good people.”

While Rodd had seen Triggs play he did not recruit her initially because he had been told she was planning on attending another school without sports. However, Dick Swanson, head coach at Denfeld High School gave Rodd a heads up about the speedy shortstop and the two connected at an area softball field to work out details.

“Swanny was coaching the Duluth Thunder and Cammie (Triggs) was playing on his summer team against my summer team,” Rodd recalled. “He (Swanson) asked me if I still was looking for players and he recommended Cammie.”

Hanson’s situation was a bit difference as she had graduated a year ago, but did not play college ball last season. Rodd found out through the coaching grapevine that she planned on attending FDLTCC for the Law Enforcement Program and he approached her to get a commitment.

“Savannah played shortstop at Esko and could be a real force for us,” explained Rodd. “She gives us more options in the infield and she can play just about anywhere.”

The Thunder will begin fall practice just after Labor Day and then start January 15th with three practices a week before going into full practice mode on February 15th.
