Hawks Take Third in State

Hermantown tied and set new tournament records during an 18-6 win over Benilde-St. Margret’s in the Class AAA Third Place Game.

The Hawks racked up 21 hits, breaking a 12 year old record, set by Jackson County Central in 2004. JCC had 20 hits in a game. Hermantown finished with 42 hits in the tournament, one more than JCC’s 41 in 2004.

In three games Hermantown scord 36 runs, scoring 18 in a game twice. The 18 run game on Friday tied the single game record. Hopkins scored 18 runs in 1978 and Hermantown scored 18 runs yesterday in a record breaking 18-12 win over Simley, Inver Grove Heights. The 36 runs were two shy of the tournament record for most runs.

As for the game itself Benilde led 4-2 after three innings of play. The Hawks would score seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-4 lead. Benilde responded with two runs and cut the deficit to three. The next inning Hermantown scored nine times on nine hits to pick up the victory.

Hannah Mihalik finished 5-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Her five hits in the game tied a record held by four others. She finished the tournament with ten hits, tying a record set by Jean Forga for Tartan in 1977. She also set a new tournament record with ten runs batted in.

Kelsey Mihalik had four hits and three RBI. Abby Wilgers had three RBI to lead the Benilde offense.
