DULUTH – Jason Herter is no stranger to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The former University of North Dakota defenseman (1988-91) will soon become reacquainted with the conference he competed in as a collegian, as he has agreed to become an assistant on the University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey coaching staff under Scott Sandelin.

Herter, 40, replaces former Bulldog assistant coach and Duluth native Brett Larson. Larson left the UMD staff last month to become the head coach and general manager of the Sioux City (Iowa) Musketeers of the United States Hockey League.

A native of Hafford, Saskatchewan, Herter spent last season in his first year as the head coach and general manager of the United States Hockey League’s Fargo (N.D.) Force. He led the Force to a regular season record of 33-22-5 before the team was ousted in the second round of the league playoffs.

Herter got his coaching career started with the Russell Stover U-16 hockey team of the Midwest Elite Hockey League before joining the Force in their inaugural season as an assistant coach under Dean Blais in 2008.

Selected in the first round (8th overall) by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1989 National Hockey League entry draft, Herter manned the blueline for the Fighting Sioux for three seasons, tallying 118 points in 119 games. He went on to play one game in the NHL before continuing an 11-year professional playing career, including stints in the AHL, IHL, and Europe.

Herter and his wife, Laura, have two children (Jordyn and Jacob).
