DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica Head Women’s Soccer Coach Dave Reyelts has announced that former Duluth East High School standout Kelsey Kehtel, along with Forest Lake’s Danni Firkus both plan on playing for the Saints in this fall.

Kehtel was a first team Duluth News Tribune All-Area selection and was part of a Greyhound team that advanced to the first round of the 2010 State Tournament. She also led the Gitchi Gummi U17 C1 Club team in scoring last summer and led the team to a runner-up finish in the East District.

“It is great to add local talent to our program, and I had the pleasure of coaching Kelsey in club soccer and look forward to continuing as her coach for the next four years,” Reyelts commented. “Kelsey is a physical player who competes every minute she is on the field. She has worked hard to improve the technical part of her game and I believe she will continue to be a scoring threat at the college level.”

Firkus is a two-time honorable mention all-conference choice for the Rangers and was named the conference’s defensive player of the year in 2009. She also excelled in the classroom, finishing in the top five percent of her graduating class and received the school’s Distinguished Academic Achievement Award.

Firkus was a starting defender/midfielder for the Twin Cities Fire Premier club team at U17 and U18, one of the best club teams in the state, and was key to the team’s defensive success.

“Danni will be an excellent addition to our program,” Reyelts said. “She is a tall, athletic, aggressive player. She is good in the air, an area we needed to improve, and also has good foot skill and composure to her game. Danni will be able to cover a large area of the field with her athleticism. Combine with her aggressive and physical play and she could have a big impact on our future success.”

Coach Dave Reyelts and the Saints are excited to get back on the pitch in 2011. The Saints won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season title last season with a young and inexperienced squad, but had a disheartening end to the season with a loss in the UMAC Tournament Championship game. The players are eager to get the season underway and are determined to get back to the tournament championship game.
