Grand Rapids High School played host to the Section 7AA track and field prelims with several local athletes putting themselves in position to punch their ticket to the 2011 state tournament.

Finals in the 3200 meter run as well as several of the field events took place on Wednesday along with prelims in all of the other track events. The top eight finishers will compete in the section finals on Saturday, with a state tournament berth going to the top relay team and the top two individual finishers in each event.

Corey Anderson of Hermantown won the boys triple jump and a trip down south with a meet leading 43’-3-1/2” jump.

Cloquet saw two boys make the cut, both will be back to complete in the finals on Saturday. Jared Anderson qualified in the 400 meter dash and Sean Ferrell in the 110 meter hurdles.

Haylee Peterson of Cloquet put herself in great shape for the finals with a preliminary winning time of 2:22.30 in the 800 meter run. Others qualifying for the finals on the girls side were a pair of Hermantown athletes, Lyla Abukhodair in the 400 meter dash and Rachael Hoium in the 100 meter hurdles.

Paige Stratioti of Duluth Central reserved a spot in the center lane of the section finals with a sweep of prelim wins in the 100, 200, and 400 meter dash. Stratioti’s time of 57.04 was a mere .12 seconds off of the Section 7AA record time in the 400 meter dash. The current record of 56.52 was set by Lindsey Mattson of Grand Rapids in 2010.
