Rails Stay Perfect With 7-3 Road Win Over Eveleth-Gilbert

EVELETH — Jack Nikko allowed one run in six innings in his first varsity start and the Rails improved to 13-0 with a 7-3 victory over Eveleth-Gilbert in a non-conference baseball game at Eveleth.

Justin Scanlon had an RBI single and Cody Dolsen hit a two-run double as Proctor’s first four batters scored in the top of the first inning. Jimmy Merling added a run on a wild pitch in the second inning, and Ryan McCarthy connected for a two-run double in the sixth inning.

Eveleth scored a run in the first inning on an RBI groundout, and added two runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Adam Currie.

Nikko (1-0, 0.78 ERA) scattered seven hits and walked three; he had one strikeout.

McCarthy, Jesse Scanlon, and Evan Scherber each had two hits for Proctor. Brain Sandstrom had two hits for Eveleth-Gilbert.


With two RBIs in Friday’s game, Ryan McCarthy is now the PHS record-holder for career RBIs. McCarthy, a junior, has 51 career RBIs. Dan Carlson (2003-06) was the previous record-holder with 50. McCarthy has 33 RBIs in 13 games this season.

The Rails are back in action at home on Saturday, May 21, against Fargo Shanley. The game will start at 3:00 p.m.
