The Lady Hawks of Hermantown captured the 2011 Lake Superior Conference Championship Tuesday as they outdistanced the Duluth Central Trojans who finished second. Superior was third, Cloquet finished in fourth place while Proctor was fifth, Ashland finished in sixth place and it was Duluth Marshall coming in seventh.

On the boys side, it was the Trojans capturing the boys conference title, as they finished more than fifty points ahead of the second place Superior Spartans. Ashland finished in third place, while Hermantown took home fourth, Cloquet finished in fifth place, Proctor was sixth, and Duluth Marshall finished in seventh place.

Winners in the girl’s events saw Rachel Hoium winning the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump, Halee Peterson of Cloquet won the 800, 1600, and was on the first place 1600-meter relay team, along with Amy Campbell, Emily Wangen, and Emily Rikkola. The Hawks won the 3200-meter relay, and the 400-meter relay. Jess Schlichting of Hermantown won the shot put while her teammate Amy Michaelson won the discus.

In the boys events winners included the Proctor Rails in the 3200-meter relay with runners, Matt Welch, Tyler Haedrich, Romeo Benish, and Chris Carlson. Benish also took first in the 1600- meter run while Welch captured the 3200 meter race. Hermantown won the 800-meter relay; Cory Kucza, Jake Royer, Andre Guito, and Jake Shemer were a part of that winning relay team.

Corey Anderson of Hermantown won the high jump with a leap of 6’ 0”, and it was Jared Anderson of Cloquet placing first in the 400 meter race. Anderson, who has been fighting shin pain and has been unable to run during practice, has been riding a stationary bike to get ready for his events.
