UMD Skate to 3-3 Tie

With a 2-0 lead and five full minutes of power play time (including 1:35 with a 5-3 advantage) early in the second period, the University of Minnesota Duluth had a golden opportunity to perhaps put the University of Notre Dame Friday night. The No. 5 Bulldogs squandered that chance — giving up a shorthanded goal in the process — and ultimately it may have cost them a key road victory as they and the Irish settled to a 3-3 overtime draw in South Bend, Ind.

Senior left winger Austin Farley, junior right winger Alex Iafallo and senior right winger Austyn Young all scored for UMD (2-1-1 overall), which never trailed the entire night. Farley put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at the 6:27 of the first when he backhanded in a rebound for his second goal of the season and 33rd of his career (tops among all active Bulldogs). Iafallo took a nifty pass from senior defenseman Willie Corrin and buried it to make it 2-0 midway through that same period.

Despite beging outshot 16-8 in the second period, the Irish drew even on goals by Justin Wade (a shortie) and Bobby Nardella four minutes apart. Five minutes into the third period, Austyn Young‘s struck for his second goal of the year, coming out of scrum with the puck following a faceoff to the left of Notre Dame’s Cal Peterson and whipping a shot by the lefty goaltender. With UMD sophomore center Jared Thomas off for an interference penalty, Sam Herr cashed in on the Irish’s seventh, and final power play attempt of the evening with 12:28 to go in regulation.

Sophomore Kasimir Kaskisuo, who has played in all four Bulldog games to date, finished with 26 saves while Peterson was credited with 42 stops.

NOTES: Junior center Tony Cameranesi extended his scoring streak to a UMD-best four games by helping set up the Bulldogs’ first goal.  He currently leads the Bulldogs in scoring with four points (all assists) … The Bulldogs have outscored the opposition 4-0 in the first period of play this season … UMD gave up only one shorthanded goal the entire 2014-15 season (40 games) …UMD has won just three of the last 20 games that have gone to overtime, going 3-5-12. Only three active Bulldogs — Alex Iafallo, junior left winger Kyle Osterberg and senior center Cal Decowski — have an overtime goal to their collegiate credit … The Bulldogs went 0-for-7 with the man advantage Friday … Senior defenseman Willie Corrin collected an assist in his first lifetime outing against Notre Dame … No Bulldog has turned in a multi-point game in 2015-16 … Austyn Young has already scored twice in four games this season after coming into the year with four collegiate goals.
