NSO – NEWS RELEASE

Senior middle blocker Monica Turner knocked down the block she needed to tie the University of Minnesota Duluth career blocking record, but the eighth-ranked Bulldogs were unable to complete a rally, falling 3-1 against Minnesota State University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Friday night in Mankato.

No. 8 UMD (16-6, 9-4 NSIC) looked flat out of the gates, making nine errors to just seven kills as MSU (13-8, 7-6 NSIC) took game one rather handily, 25-14. The Bulldogs answere back 25-16 in game two, hitting over 300 points higher at .286 in the game.

It would be the high-water mark for UMD as they would collect 27 attacking errors in the match and hit .171 as a team, dropping game three 25-21 before seeing a game four rally fall short, 27-25 against the Mavericks.

Turner knocked down career block no. 363 on the first point of game two, while adding a kill as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the only set the offense looked sharp. She’d finish with six kills on the night, the lone block, and added a dig.

Senior outside hitter Mariah Scharf had a game-high 17 kills for the Bulldogs and junior middle blocker Sydnie Mauch performed admirably with 16 kills and a .462 attack percentage, but UMD’s errors didn’t end on offense, collecting nine service errors, a blocking error and three serve-reception errors.

Though they showed grit in game four, rallying from down 23-21 to eventually lead 24-23 and 25-24, the Mavericks scored the matches’ final three points, fittingly, on errors by the Bulldogs.

UP NEXT
UMD will not have much time to dwell as the Bulldogs need to look forward to tomorrow afternoon and a rematch against No. 4 Concordia University, St. Paul. Opening serve is set for 4:00 p.m. in the Ganglehoff Center.
