A seven-run second inning catapulted the Rails to an 8-3 victory over Virginia in a non-conference baseball game at Stock Field in Virginia. Proctor had six hits in a seven run second inning to blow the game open. The Rails also capitalized on three Virginia errors in the inning, which was punctuated by a two-run single by Ian Scherber that put Proctor ahead 8-0. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ben Nelson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) needed just 79 pitches thrown in seven innings to earn the complete game win. He allowed three unearned runs on five hits and one walk; he had three strikeouts. Nelson had shut out the Blue Devils through six-and-two-thirds innings before surrendering back-to-back home runs to Gavin Nichols and Tom Ostergaard in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Virginia’s Patrick Anderson threw five-and-two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of starter Jeremy Paschke. Anderson allowed three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Justin Scanlon was three-for-four with a double and two RBIs for Proctor.

Nichols and Ostergaard had two hits apiece for Virginia.

Proctor (4-0) travels to Ashland on Tuesday May 3, for a rescheduled game. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at LumberJack Field on the Northland College campus.
