Duluth Padres Open The Season With A Road Win

Bob Eastman was five-for-five with a double and three RBIs to lead Duluth to an 8-6 win over Spooner in a non-league amateur baseball game at Spooner. It was the season-opening game for both teams.

Spooner scored two runs and had the potential tying-run at-bat in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Chris Vendela struck out the last two batters of the game as he earned the save.

Nathan Windschill earned the win in relief of starter Anthony Bush. Bush allowed three unearned runs on two hits and two walks in four innings. He had three strikeouts. Windschill allowed one unearned run in the fifth inning, and Gary Fritch worked a perfect sixth inning to set the table for Vendela. Vendela allowed two runs on one hit, three walks, and two hit batsmen in three innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Noah Hobbs was two-for-five with a double and two RBIs for Duluth.

Spooner’s Tom Romportl was three-for-five with two RBIs.

The Padres are next in action on May 1 at Cumberland, Wis. Their home opener at Bulldog Park is on May 15 at 1:30 p.m. against the Ashland Merchants.
