CLOQUET – Adam Hanson fired a one-hitter and the Cloquet baseball team opened the season with an 8-0 shutout victory over Greenway at Ed Mettner Field on Thursday afternoon.

The game was the first of the season for the Jacks who have had six games scratched due to inclement weather, or bad field conditions.

“It’s tough to play baseball in northern Minnesota,” said Cloquet coach Rick Stowell. “We had 21 practices before our first game. Maybe it wasn’t a bad thing to have that many practices this year since we lost eight seniors from last year’s state tournament team.”

The Jacks jumped on Greenway early with four runs in the first inning. Hanson helped his own cause by coaxing a leadoff walk to start the rally.

Cloquet tacked on another run in the second inning, two more in the fourth and a final run in the fifth inning to end the scoring.

Hanson reached base in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple and a pair of runs scored in addition to a walk and being hit by a pitch. Cole Johnson added two hits including a double and two rbi’s.

On the mound Hanson was at his best with an eight strikeout performance and giving up only one hit.
