CLOQUET – A nifty double play, timely hitting and solid pitching helped the Cloquet Lumberjack girls softball team take a big 9-3 win over Duluth East at Braun Park on Tuesday. The win improved the Jacks to 2-0 on the season.

Senior hurler, Denise Rodd, tossed a tidy seven-hitter in cold conditions and Lizz Jezierski bashed out three more hits in her second game in a row to help lead the Jacks.

The Lumberjacks also got a couple of defensive gems in the field including a mid-game double play. With an East runner on second the Greyhounds smoked a ball to the left of third baseman Shania Paulson. Paulson gloved the ball, looked the runner back to second and fired a strike to first baseman Alyssa Michaelson. At that point the runner bolted for third, but Michaelson responded with a perfect throw back to Paulson who made the tag for the put out.

Paulson added a pair of RBI’s in the win and Kayla Masessa added a pair of hits and scored twice in the win.

Cloquet opened the game with a three-run first inning, tacked on two more in the second inning, a pair in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth inning to secure the win.

The Greyhounds had chances offensively, but the Jacks twice kept them off the board in crucial bases loaded situations.
