Yellowjacket women’s soccer coach Melissa Nelmark has announced that Savannah Schramm, a midfielder from Carlton (Minn.) High School, has committed to UW-Superior and will play soccer for the Yellowjackets beginning in the fall of 2011.

Schramm was the captain of the Esko-Carlton girls soccer team during her junior and senior seasons. In three varsity seasons, Schramm scored 17 goals and had 42 points. At one time a goalkeeper, Schramm made the switch to midfielder during her high school career. Schramm is also the captain of the Carlton basketball team and was voted her team’s best defensive player a year ago.

Esko Carlton Head Soccer Coach Nicole Peterson believes Schramm’s play at the midfield position will be a nice addition for the Yellowjackets. “Savannah has a strong shot and her left footed cross will be an asset to the UWS women’s program.” Peterson explained.

Schramm also competes on the Carlton track and field team, specializing in the triple jump and the one-mile run. She is a member of the 4×800-meter relay team as well.

“We are pleased to welcome Savannah Schramm. She is a tremendous athlete and a natural leader and role model. Being a former goalkeeper, she has an outstanding ability to read the game and be in the right place at the right time,” Nelmark said. “With her strong work ethic, excellent character, and leadership qualities, Savannah is going to fit in nicely with the team. We see her making an impact right away.”

Her high school coach Peterson agreed. “She will bring her intensity and passion for the game of soccer to UWS. She is a vocal leader and is a physical player that should transition well to playing college soccer. “

Schramm plays club soccer for the Carlton County United Competitive Soccer Club and has been a team captain there for three seasons.

Aside from athletics, Schramm is also strong in the classroom. She is a member of the honor roll, the math team and the knowledge bowl team. She is a past recipient of the Mathematics Award from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. She intends to use her math skills and major in mathematics and engineering at UW-Superior with the goal of eventually becoming a thermodynamic engineer.

“UW-Superior has a good math program and it gives me the opportunity to play soccer and graduate with a dual degree,” Schramm said. “I will have the chance to play at the next competitive level on the soccer field and personally improve my skills and I’m excited about that.”
