CARLTON – The spring softball season couldn’t have started out better for new Head Coach Denny Johnson and the Carlton Bulldogs softball team if they would have been allowed to write the script. The Lady Bulldogs have yet to give up a run and are 2-0 after defeating Silver Bay by a 10-0 score on Tuesday.

The 10-0 5-inning win over the Mariners comes a day after a 7-0 spanking of East Central, where the Bulldogs used a 4 run 5th inning to blow the game open. Junior pitcher Megan Bodin has been dominating, picking up shut-outs in both home starts. Against Silver Bay Bodin struck out 5 while scattering 5 hits.

While not having a lot of outside time to work courtesy of late spring snow, Carlton is beginning to click offensively. The Dogs got a team effort on Tuesday with several players helping out in the scoring department. Brooke Camps hammered out a double and a 2-RBI single, Alana Groth picked up 2 RBI’s with an RBI double and an RBI single. Megan Nelson added RBI singles while Clarissa Nelson had a 2-RBI double.

Johnson, an assistant coach last year, and head coach of the program when it was a combined effort with Wrenshall High School returned to the helm to replace Brooke Tondryk talked about getting started after the 7-0 win on Monday, commenting to Northland Sports Online. “It’s early and we obviously have things to work on, but it’s nice to get outside, get a “W” and get the cobwebs out.”

After picking up the two wins at home, Carlton will be on the road Thursday when they trek up the shore to take on the Cook County Vikings then travel to Hill City on Friday.
