Hermantown Takes Out Cloquet In Playoff Action

The Hermantown Hawks picked up their third win this season over the Cloquet Lumberjacks on Friday night as the Hawks defeated Cloquet by a final score of 55-46. With the win they advance to the section semi-finals on Tuesday night. Hermantown will face the number two seed Hibbing Bluejackets. The other section 7AAA semi-final will have the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks taking on Chisago Lakes.


The Lumberjacks and the Hawks battled in the first half with the Lumberjacks keeping the game close. The Hawks did close on a first half run which saw Hermantown leading 31-23 at the break. The second half saw both teams playing hard and it would remain a hard fought battle until the end.


The Lumberjacks were led in scoring by senior Andy Wappes, who finished with a game high 23 points on the night. He was followed by Zach Peterson who added 6 points, Dillon Johnson and Trent Moe both added 3, and it was Sean Ferrell, Adam Laine, and Cody Stevens all finishing with 2 points.


The Hawks were led by Corey Anderson who finished with 14 points on the night. Kevin Folman got all his 12 points on four three-pointers. Cory Kucza added 12, Spencer Johnson had 8 and Zach Goplin finished with 3 points.


The Lumberjacks finish the season with a 7-20 overall record, season that will be highlighted by a three game win streak which included a victory over Esko in mid February.


The Hermantown Hawks improve to 15-12 overall on the season and they will advance now to the Section 7AAA Semi-Finals in Hibbing. Their semi-final opponent will be the Hibbing Bluejackets. The other semi-final will feature Grand Rapids and North Branch.


Northland Sports Online would like to recognize the four graduating seniors from the Lumberjacks roster this season and would also like to thank them for all their hard work and dedication throughout the years to Cloquet Basketball.


Those four Lumberjack seniors are senior captain Andy Wappes, Dane Kiehn, Karl Palmquist, and Cody Stevens. NSO wishes all the best in their future endeavors.
