ML-WR Boys Close Out Regular Season With Record Tying 24th Win

The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels picked up their 24th win of the season by defeating the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars at home by a score of 67-51. The win matches the record for wins in a season, tying the 2005 Rebels team which advanced to the state basketball tournament.


The Rebels had three players in double figures Friday as they were led by senior guard Trevor Nummela who finished with 24 points on the night. Nummela finished an amazing 12-14 shooting from the floor in the Rebels win. Nummela was also 1-2 from the free throw line as the Rebels picked up the section win.


Moose Lake-Willow River jumped out to an early lead on Friday night, leading by ten points, 38-28 at halftime. The second half saw the Rebels increase their lead as they went on to finished with the 16 point win on senior night at Willow River High School. The win also secures the number one seed in the section tournament which begins on Wednesday night.


Following Nummela and his 24 points was, Caleb Koecher with 14, Ryan Adamczak added 13, Tyler Huso finished with 8, Nick Tokar added 5 points, and it was Jeff Hansen finishing with 2 points for the Rebels. The Jaguars were led by Brady Harth with 17 points, his brother Brandon Harth also finished in double figures with 10.


The Rebels improve to 24-2 on the regular season and they will open the Section 7AA playoffs at home Wednesday night when they host the Aitkin Gobblers in opening round play. The Jaguars fall to 8-14 to close out the regular season and they will face the Braham Bombers in their opening round game of the section tournament at Braham High School on Wednesday.
