The Cloquet boys basketball team struggled earlier this season to find themselves as a team, but they seem to be clicking a lot better as Tuesday night they won their third straight game as they beat the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers 51-39 at Marshall High School.

The Lumberjacks had used several different combinations of starting lineups this season while they were searching for their identity as a team. The current line-up seems to have things going in the right direction as the Lumberjacks win their third in a row.

Cloquet built a four point 27-23 lead at halftime, with both teams battling tight in the early going; it was Cloquet jumping out to an eleven point 22-11 lead when Zach Peterson nailed a three-pointer. Marshall battled back to cut the lead to four at the break.

The second half saw Cloquet jump out fast to a 15 point lead when Andy Wappes hit a shot down low. The Hilltoppers battled but could never cut the lead to under double digits as the Lumberjacks went on to the 12 point win on the road.

Cloquet was led by Zach Peterson, who finished with 15 points on the night. Dane Kiehn and Andy Wappes each chipped in with 12, Dillon Johnson added 10 points and rounding out the scoring was Trent Moe, who finished with 2 points.

Marshall was led by Aaron Dunphy who finished with 12 points, Eric Miklausich added 9, Matt Goldschmidt finished with 8, Ian Zenner and Bryce Carlson each added 3, while John Fox and Adam Kneepkens closed the scoring with 2 points each.

Cloquet improves to 7-16 on the season; they are back in action on Friday night when the face Superior in a Lake Superior Conference contest. Friday’s game is at Superior High School. Marshall falls to 9-15 overall and they will travel to International Falls on Friday night to take on the Broncos.
