Hermantown Girls Alpine Team Finishes 6th At State

The Hermantown girls alpine team took sixth place in the state meet Wednesday at Giants Ridge.
Finishing with 109 points, the Hawks completed another great season and the first for an entire team to compete at the state level.


Individually, Megan Danelski finished third with a combined time of 1:14.4 for the two runs. She was fifth after the first run, but finished with the second best time in the second run at noon. Teammate Olivia Tusa was 16th overall with a combined time of 1:17.6. Finishing third for the team was McKenzie Bremel, who was 68th win a time of 1:29.8. Madison Danelski was 73rd with a time of 1:34.0. Madison had one of the better times in the first run with a 37.69. Lexa Haapanen was 82nd with a time of 2:33.6. Rachel Humes also raced for Hermantown, but did not complete the course.

Minnetonka won the team competition with 149 points, followed by Bloomington Jefferson 140, Minnehaha Academy 135, Benilde-St. Margarets 135, Edina 120, Hermantown 109, East Ridge (Woodbury) 108 and Duluth East 105.


Brenna Murray of Bloomington Jefferson was the girls individual champion with a time of 1:13.4.


Look for the Hawks to make another run in 2012, as all six racers are underclassmen. Tusa is a junior, Megan a sophomore, Haapanen a freshman, Madison and Humes are eighth graders and Bremel is a seventh grader.


On the boys side, Matt Borash competed as an individual for Hermantown. The freshman finished 66th with a time of 1:29.7. His first run was 38.69 and his second was 50.99.


St. Thomas Academy repeated as state team champions for the boys, finishing with 174 points. The Cadets were followed by Minnetonka 167, Centennial 154, Orono 111, Burnsville 108, Stillwater Area 95, Edina 95 and Duluth East 84.


Dylan Thomas of St. Thomas Academy was the individual champion with a time of 1:07.0.
